  • Not just getting wet!

It was REALLY great to have a baptism in our church last Sunday. Individuals from different backgrounds and situations were baptised, all of whom had become Christians and wanted to take this step. Of course, they had been sharing the fact that they had become Christians for some time, but it was a real privilege to be involved as they made a very public declaration of their faith by being baptised.

  • Running the Rat-Race?

I’ve never thought that the term ‘rat race’ is a very flattering one! Yet the daily grind of getting up to go to work to buy the food, to come home to eat, to enjoy a little diversionary leisure before going to bed to get up in the morning and start it all again – that does certainly feel at times as if we are on some kind of endless wheel!

  • Operation ‘Over’ Lord

It has been extremely moving to watch the D-Day commemoration celebrations on our news screens over the last few days. Hundreds of old men gathering to remember comrades who fell and to celebrate the victory that has delivered to Europe a period of (mostly) peace that has lasted almost 70 years. Had they failed in their mission then I doubt very much that our church would be able to meet at all, and less still would I have the freedom to share these thoughts from the Bible with anyone who was interested enough to read them!

  • Where is your hope?

Some years ago I was involved in putting together a questionnaire that asked people about the ‘big questions’ of life, things about where we come from, belief in God, the purpose of life, whether there is life after death, etc…. The project had two aims: the first was to genuinely discover what the majority of the target group actually believed and the second aim was simply to encourage people to begin to think about the big questions in the first place. In fact the whole thing was a flop! Not because the questionnaire was badly put together or many...

  • A 'Christian' State?

The book of Revelation does not pull punches! As John was given a vision behind the scenes of History, so he describes both the Devil and the agents or ‘tools’ he employs in the most graphic terms. The hideous dragon of chapter 12 may sound like the stuff of nightmares, but the devil that it represents is the stuff of nightmares. Likewise the ‘beasts’ that he uses are as horrible as he is.

  • Resurrection – So what?

Becoming Christian changes everything… or at least, it should! When you read those various individuals described in the Gospel accounts, their lives were changed completely. I don’t just mean the obvious candidates like those who met the Lord Jesus as He helped them directly – the blind who were made to see, the lame made to walk, etc… I mean those whose whole outlook on life and the future was turned-around. From the apostles right down to those unnamed for whom becoming Christians became their primary identity. In fact, when you read the New Testament, there is a...

  • Right up to date!

Despite claims to the contrary, the Bible never fails to amaze me at how up to date and relevant it is!

  • Why write a blog?

Why write a blog? It strikes me that there are plenty of really clever people who are already writing far more great stuff than most us have time to read - so why am I doing this? The short-answer is that I'm doing it for our church! According to Eph 4, my God-given task is to prepare God's people for works of service, and there simply isn't enough time in everyone's busy schedule each week for me to help everyone gain a Biblical perspective on their life, the universe and everything.
